The Bible tells us that we also have to be very diligent about what thoughts we allow in our heads. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 says “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”. We are expected to make sure that any thought we entertain that is against what God says, is obediently taken hold of.
How do we do this? You do it by refusing to entertain the thoughts that Scripture rejects and by acting on those that it approves. You govern your thoughts. You do not let them run you; you run them. So, stop yourself and declare something out loud from Scripture!
Can you see the verse says “casting down arguments”? Hypochondria is a stronghold -it carries on existing because we support it by arguing that we DO have a disease- we have to stop those arguments with the Word of God.
A stronghold is dangerous. They are built upon deception and lies that we’ve accepted into our minds; and it forms a vicious cycle:
1. You get the lie from Satan that you may have a disease (it is here that you make the choice to listen and take in that lie or counteract it with God’s Word)
2. It becomes fear
3. You meditate on it, worry about it and think about it all the time
4. It then becomes an idol because you’re putting it above everything whether you want to or not. Anything we place before God is an idol
5. You find yourself in the tight grip of a stronghold.
A stronghold is an incorrect thinking pattern. Ask God for forgiveness for giving in to the lies of the enemy and being controlled by fear. Then ask Him to break that stronghold in Jesus name and wash your mind as white as snow.
Since our thoughts are not His thoughts, nor our ways His ways, we need to make a conscious, deliberate effort to fill our head with God’s Word in order to think correctly–keeping acceptable thoughts and filtering out the unacceptable ones. The management of our mind is a daily task. It involves continuous study, and no one can do it for us.
The easiest way to do this is to learn some Scripture by heart, apply it personally and it will be available to you when those thoughts come. Choose your favourites or ones the Holy Spirit presses on your heart to use. For example:
Romans 12:2 “I will not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of my mind, that by testing I may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Phil 4:8 “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, I will think about these things.”
Eph 4:23 “I declare in Jesus name that I will be renewed in the spirit of my mind”
Phil 4:6-7 “In Jesus name I declare that I will not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving I thank You God that You hear my requests. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.”
Col 3:2 “I will set my mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
1 Cor 2:16 “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct Him? But I, [insert name], have the mind of Christ!”
John 17:17 “Lord, sanctify me in Your truth; Your word is truth! Not hypochondria/anxiety!”
2 Cor 4:8-9 “I am afflicted in in my mind right now, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed! Jesus is my Victory!”
“I remind you Satan that it is written, ‘He that is within me is greater than he that is in the world.’ I command you to bow your knee to the Name of Jesus and leave me.”
